Expanding Recovery Support in Tribal Communities

Key Findings.
In 2023, Choctaw Nation Behavioral Health (CNBH) in southeastern Oklahoma faced an overwhelming demand for its health services, which cater to 53,000 individuals within its tribal communities. The strain on its clinics, the sole hospital, and residential substance use disorder (SUD) treatment facilities led to unmanageable caseloads and year-long waitlists for recovery support. Tragically, the consequences were severe, with two counties in the region ranking among the top five in Oklahoma for opioid overdose deaths. In a heartbreaking turn, one of these counties mourned the loss of six young lives to overdoses within a brief span.
Recognizing that traditional methods were insufficient to address the extensive needs across nearly 11,000 square miles of rural terrain, CNBH took decisive action. In February 2023, they partnered with CHESS Health to introduce eRecovery, which includes the Connections app, a 24/7 digital lifeline that provides peer support, therapy modules, and crisis response, all accessible with a tap of a button.
Now, just two years later, the results are compelling. Approximately 75% of enrollees utilize the app regularly, meeting nearly 11,000 weekly goals. This resource empowers individuals in their tribal communities to navigate high-risk moments and remain committed to their recovery journey.
